The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck below the Adam's apple. It produces thyroid hormones that help regulate growth, development, metabolism, and other important bodily functions. Thyroid disorders occur when the thyroid gland does not produce the right amount of hormones. This can cause the metabolism to slow down (hypothyroidism) or speed up (hyperthyroidism). Some key facts about thyroid disorders:
- They are more common in women, especially over age 50.
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US. This is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the thyroid.
- Hyperthyroidism is most often caused by Graves' disease, another autoimmune disorder, or thyroid nodules called toxic adenomas.
- Thyroid disorders often run in families.
